Communism Tour

Tour information

Today, Bucharest is a nice city to live in, yet until the late 1980’s, Romania was a communist state and Bucharest was a troubled place. Anything related to the west was forbidden to the extent that even talking to a westerner on the street could mean a trip to a Police station for an interview with a Securitate (secret police) officer. That era left its marks on Bucharest, a city once known as ‘Little Paris’. Communism meant small dark apartments stacked on top of each other in crowded workers’ neighborhoods. It also meant razing hundreds of beautiful houses in order to build one huge eye-sore, the People’s Palace. It meant interrogation dungeons that everyone knew about and elegant neighborhoods dedicated to the top brass. This tour is done by car and covers all major Communist landmarks in the city centre as well as a visit to a worker’s neighborhood, for a true perspective into life in communist times. The grand finale is in Primaverii quarter, a forbidden area in the 1980s, in front of Ceausescu’s former residence.
