Located by the castle is the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul along with the Vyšehrad Cemetery which contains the remains of well-known people from Czech history such as Antonín Dvorák, Bedrich Smetana, Karel Capek, and Alphons Mucha. It’s a known legend among locals that Vyšehrad may have been the first location of settlement of what would later become the city of Prague. The Deteriorating castle of Vyšehrad was abandoned when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV began to build the Prague castle in the early 14th century, and today its role is a place of peace that is frequently visited by Czechs.
Another feature in the tour is the Czech Cubism, which is a fascinating art period that took place between 1910 and 1914 when the first World War started. The style can be seen in the city’s arts and architecture and features sharp points, slicing planes and crystalline shapes. Just a little walk away from the Vyšehrad Castle is a collection of unique Cubistic houses, which are quite rare to find in Europe.
